The worldwide RCE-network: Basic information
What is a RCE?
Currently, the UN establishes a worldwide network of Regional Centres of Expertise (RCE). Before establishing a RCE a long application process is required, which is supervised by the United Nations University (UNU). The UNU also evaluates the RCEs every second year, therefore high quality standards are guaranteed. By establishing a RCE, the UNU values the efforts of a region for Education for Sustainable Development. Nevertheless a RCE is not just an award but also a duty to engage further in Education for Sustainable Development, especially in building various networks regarding this theme. Right now there are 55 RCEs established, 4 of them in Germany. (May 2008)
How does a RCE work?
It is the main task of a RCE to establish a network of groups, institutions and persons interested in a specific theme. Its aim is to develop ways to solve regional problems. International exchange is very important to a RCE: Several RCEs all over the world are connected strongly if they work on the same theme. Furthermore a solution of a problem is exchanged and provided to all RCEs. The work itself consists of two different parts: First of all scientists try to develop concepts to solve the defined regional problems. These problems are often neglected in science. Secondly there are practical projects to realize and test these concepts.
What is the sense of a RCE?
In the RCE a network of institutions, groups, companies and persons tries to solve regional problems. The RCE is the platform of this network. Throughout the network the offers are more visible and the exchange between the partners is easier. Because of the international aspect of the RCEs and its certified high standard, there is an easier access to third-part funding,e.g. EU-funding. Therefore a RCE is a competent and cost-effective way to work on regional problems.
